Liberatory Aesthetics for a Just Transition? pan­el discussion

This pan­el is sup­posed to be about joy­ful, lib­er­a­to­ry aes­thet­ics. So what do we need to devel­op in order to advance that con­ver­sa­tion? What kind of non-white,non-Anglo,decolonial aes­thet­ics and imag­i­nar­ies are need­ed today for this polit­i­cal moment?

Environmental Aesthetics and Everyday Life

It is com­mon­ly rec­og­nized that artis­tic strate­gies are effec­tive in pro­mot­ing social, polit­i­cal, and reli­gious agen­das. What is less rec­og­nized is that many deci­sions and actions we make in our dai­ly life are also guid­ed by aes­thet­ic pref­er­ences and judg­ments. In the United States today unfor­tu­nate­ly, the pop­u­lar aes­thet­ic taste seems to work against the ideals of sus­tain­abil­i­ty and jus­tice pro­posed by the Green New Deal.

A Future with­out Waste

What I want to tell you is that in 2050 we don’t even have waste any­more. There will be no waste in 2050. Everything will be seen as a trea­sure, because we will have cre­at­ed what some smart peo­ple call a cir­cu­lar economy.
