For a while, I would go to bed at the normal time for like a 12 year-old, and then I would wake up at three o’clock in the morning, head downstairs, plug in the modem, dial into one of these BBSes, and spend a couple of hours chatting with strangers, before packing it up around five AM and going back to bed.

Most companies […] don’t deliberately want to be malicious in the technology that they’re making. However, if you don’t think about the fact that your solution is not the only one, and is going to enter into a whole host of different things, then you are going to end up causing problems and it might as well be malice.
Designers do spend a fair bit of time thinking about what materials to use, but they don’t necessarily think about why those materials have the properties that they have.
